MATLAB: How to install Add-Ons from the File Exchange

MATLAB

There are many different types of add-ons available on the File Exchange, and they come in different file formats. What is the recommended way to install each one?

Best Answer

File Exchange includes add-ons such as toolboxes, apps, hardware support packages, and features. Starting in R2015b, you can also find these add-ons in the Add-On Explorer, along with MathWorks products. (Note: Add-On Explorer is not available for prerelease users of MATLAB)
To install add-ons from File Exchange, first download the submission. Once downloaded, you may open the submission in the operating system or the MATLAB Current Folder browser. For those customers with more than one MATLAB installation and to ensure installation in the correct one, you must open the file from the MATLAB Current Folder Browser of the desired MATLAB installation. This is particularly important for these four kinds of installable file types:
  • Hardware support packages (MLPKGINSTALL files)
  • MathWorks feature add-ons (MLPKGINSTALL files)
  • Community toolboxes (MLTBX files)
  • Apps (MLAPPINSTALL files)
To install zip files, use the current folder browser’s right click menu to extract them and add the folder location to the path.
