[Tex/LaTex] Where to get help for the package options

TeX: MiKTeX 2.9
IDE: Kile 2.1

For getting help on usage of package options, I usually Google "foo options latex", where foo is the name of the package. I wanted to know whether the documentation is available on the host machine where my LaTeX is installed. I can see all the packages I am using in the MiKTeX package manager. But in the package manager I am not able to locate the help files associated with the packages (if at all they are present on my computer).

Under most operating systems,

texdoc <packagename>

will open up the TeX documentation (in your default PDF browser) associated with the package. Alternatively, CTAN contains all the packages that form part of both the MiKTeX and TeX Live distributions, from where you can follow the links to their documentation.

The "personal tree" on Mac OS X is rooted in the Library folder for each user. However the installer doesn't touch the users' home directories, so the

~/Library/texmf

folder has to be created. Inside it one has to rebuild the usual TDS structure, so llncs.cls should go into

~/Library/texmf/tex/latex/llncs

and all folders must be created manually. So, open Library in your folder, create texmf, open it, create tex, open it, create latex, open it, create llncs and finally put llncs.cls in the last created folder.

This is necessary in order that the TeX programs can correctly find the file.

Note that no "hashing" operation needs to be performed: the "personal tree" is always searched, since it's assumed not to be very big.

On GNU/Linux systems one should omit the "Library" level.

The intended user documentation is encguide.pdf as returned by texdoc textcomp. If you want the actual documented source then the file is generated from ltoutenc.dtx in the base latex distribution (the same source as the fontenc package) If you run pdflatex on ltoutenc.dtx (in texmf-dist/doc/latex/base in texlive) then you will get ltoutenc.pdf, this file isn't normally made in the distribution.

Alternatively, as other parts of ltoutenc.dtx are included in the format, you can see the typeset form as chapter l of source2e.pdf so texdoc source2e page 69.
