[Tex/LaTex] Import file from another folder

Hi I need to import a file.tex (I cannot move it from this folder) file from a different folder of the main file.

is it possible? how i should do?

First, use \usepackage{import}. Then, use \import{Path}{File.tex}. Inside the first braces, use the file path, eg. /Folder/OtherFolder/.../PackageFolder/. In the second one, put the file name(including extensions like .tex).

For example, if the file's relative path is /Parts/Project/file.tex, this is the MWE you would use.

\documentclass{...}
...
\usepackage{import}
...
\begin{document}
    ...
    \import{/Parts/Project/}{file.tex}
    ...
\end{document}

Note: I'm not sure if you use file extension. Try experimenting!

When using the import package (which provides the \import command), you must ensure that the path argument includes the trailing slash /. So you need to do:

\import{/Users/john/Documents/Uni/Studienarbeit/Latex/Kapitel/GDP/}{GDP}

Note the / at the end of the path.

Update 2020 As of v6.2 (part of TL 2020) the trailing slash is no longer required.

As others have noted in the comments, it's usually better to use the \include command for this kind of thing, although the import package does have some interesting capabilities for relative names within the included documents. Edit: The matplotlib backend has been updated to emit \includegraphics instead of \pgfimage. The best solution is to update matplotlib if possible.

From what I found, there is no better way. This answer notes that pgfimage uses includegraphics, but does not propagate the relative paths. Looking through the matplotlib pgf backend source, changing pgfimage to includegraphics does not appear to be a configurable option on the matplotlib side of the equation.

A work around I came up with was to intercept the output and update the appropriate lines.

# lots of plotting commands
fig.savefig(output)
_, ext = os.path.splitext(output)
if ext == ".pgf":
    with open(output, "r") as fid:
        lines = fid.readlines()

    with open(output, "w") as fid:
        for line in lines:
            fid.write(re.sub(r"\\pgfimage", r"\\includegraphics", line))

This is really only a “solution” if you can edit the plotting routines.
