Is there italic correction specific to slanted letters (\textsl)? I always use \textsl for slanted letters (not \slshape), so would redefining \slshape to add an \/ at the end be the easiest way of adding italic correction to slanted letters in my documents?

You can try it with hacking into LaTeX's \check@nocorr@. Remove the left correction and \let the italic correction to \, (or another suitable amount). This may have issues, but for your code it works. I have assumed that you use Linux Libertine throughout your document; otherwise you'll have to make the hack local.

If you are using AMSLaTeX, then, following Vafa Khalighi's email at http://tug.org/pipermail/tex-live/2011-October/030337.html you seem to need to do (1):
\everymath\expandafter{\the \everymath \luatexcatcodetable\CatcodeTableLaTeX}
\everydisplay\expandafter{\the\everydisplay \luatexcatcodetable\CatcodeTableLaTeX}
instead of simply (2)
\everymath{\luatexcatcodetable\CatcodeTableLaTeX}
\everydisplay{\luatexcatcodetable\CatcodeTableLaTeX}
I myself found on a big book with a lot of AMSLaTeX that LuaLaTeX gave errors with (2) but worked fine with (1).

Every letter has an associated italic correction, It is usually non zero for slanted letters. LaTeX automatically inserts
\/at the start or end of\textsl(and all similar commands such as\textrm) if the font slope changes from upright to slanted or vice versa.
