I followed the instruction from CTAN: http://docs.miktex.org/faq/packages.html, then I ran the command:
mpm --verbose --install mdwtools.
The system said the package was installed successfully, but I couldn't find mdwtools folder under my C:\Program Files (x86)\MiKTeX 2.9\tex\latex directory. Does this package require a special installation? I'm current using TexMaker on Windows 7. Most of the time, I just include the line: \usepackage{X}, and TexMaker will automatically install the package. However, with mdwtools, nothing happened! So what can I do in this case? Thank you.

On my Windows 7 system, the following got things working:
- Download and install Python 2.7.2
- Download and install distribute
- Add
C:\Python27\Scriptsto the Windows path (I also addedC:\Python27for general convenience) - At the Command Prompt, do
easy_install Pygmentize
That is it install-wise: the current Pygmentize does come with a Windows executable. You can test this by doing pygmentize -V at the Command Prompt.
What I then found is that the test that minted uses for Pygmentize on Windows is broken. So I used the lines
\newcommand\TestAppExists[3]{#2}
\usepackage{minted}
to bypass the test (this basically forces the TRUE branch). The example document then compiles fine.
I began by turning the code into a more minimal example to narrow down the problem.
I then determined that the primary problem was that the francais option to babel conflicts with the use of \pgfornamenthline etc. Based on Gonzalo Medina's advice responding to my comment on his answer here, adding the babel tikz library resolves the problem:

As Gonzalo Medina explains, this solution is only available with tikz 3. If you have an older version, you need to turn the relevant shorthand characters off when necessary. For example:

mdwtools is not a single sty but a bundle of packages. To trigger the automatic on-the-fly installation you would have to use one of this packages in your document e.g.
\usepackage{mdwtab}.You installed the package in user mode so it should now be in one of the miktex trees in your user profile. Probably in the one called UserConfig or UserInstall. Look up the path in miktex settings (user mode).
It could be that the
mpmcommand didn't update the FNDB so run eitherinitexmf -uon the command line, or use miktex settings (user mode).
