When I try to put a footnote into a definition environment (or theorem, etc.) it fails, whereas it works well in plain text…
How can I fix it? (N.B. I use thmbox, I don't know if this have an incidence).

You can use \footnotemark within the float and then \footnotetext at some point on the first page but outside the float. Alternatively if you used \thanks it is defined (in two column mode) to do exactly that. It makes a mark at the point it is used, but saves the text so that \maketitle first sets the title texts in a 2 column float and then executes all the saved \footnotetext commands from \thanks.
I used the scrextend package which I first read about here: Different formatting of footnote mark in text and in footnote. It mimics features of KOMA-Script for other document classes, so to read up on the documentation, one looks for KOMA-Script, for example, here: http://texdoc.net/texmf-dist/doc/latex/koma-script/scrguien.pdf.
The syntax I introduce is
\footdef{number}{word}{definition}
to introduce a new definition of word using the definition number. If I am citing a definition previously provided, I use
\footdefmark{number}{word}.

of the word. I can repeat a \footdefmark{1}{test} of something already done.

forming the bit width of the processor} for the Z80 processor.
And this is back to\footnote{A Normal Footnote} a normal footnote.

Use
\footnotemarkinside the definition environment, then outside the environment (it might have to be after another paragraph) place\footnotetext{...}.Worst case, you might have to hard-code the footnote number like
\footnotetext[7]{...}.
