[Tex/LaTex] Can’t type Hebrew with polyglossia

My ultimate goal is to create a beamer presentation in Hebrew. While toying with things, I got stuck with an error:

! Package etoolbox Error: Toggle 'Hebrew@RL' undefined.

which is thrown on the line

\setmainlanguage{Hebrew}

On the following code:

How can I create a Hebrew beamer presentation then? Or even, how can I create a Hebrew LaTeX output?

David CLM however is a Hebrew font. How can I overcome this?

The simple answer to your question is that you can't use beamer with bidi (which is loaded by polyglossia whenever you set a Right-to-Left language such as Hebrew or Arabic.)

As an aside, Beamer uses a sans serif font by default, but fontspec's \setmainfont sets the Roman font. Changing

\setmainfont{David CLM}

\setsansfont{David CLM}

will allow beamer to use the Hebrew font, but without RTL support, this isn't really useful.

The bidi package provides a bidipresentation class, but this is extremely simple, and offers none of the functionality that beamer offers.

Unfortunately this seems to be the current state of affairs. But both bidi and beamer are complex packages, so getting them to work together is likely not trivial.

Well \texttt switches to the tt-family. This is as default the tt-font from the latin modern family, which doesn't contain the hebrew script. So you can't use it in a hebrew environment.

You should either define a "tthebrewfamily":

\newfontfamily\tthebrewfamily[Script=Hebrew]{...}% 
\DeclareTextFontCommand{\texttthebrew}{\tthebrewfamily}

Or you set with \setmainfont, setmonofont the standard fonts to fonts which contain and activate Hebrew. In this case you will probably have to use \ttfamilylatin etc in the english parts (and perhaps have to define this fonts).

Addition: It did take me some time to find two different fonts with the opentype feature "Script hebrew". With this the following worked without error:

But while looking through the fonts I saw that quite a lot have Hebrew characters but only very few the Script Hebrew. So I'm wondering if it is a good idea that polyglossia (gloss-hebrew) request it. Is it needed to type Hebrew?

Format today’s year per the Hebrew calendar with polyglossia

This answer is exclusively based on hebrewcal.sty (Hebrew calendar for polyglossia).

The current hebrew year is 5781. The abbreviated format (as used by Ha'aretz) is to quote only 781.

The code can deliver the full year or the short year format using the fullyear key.

In hebrewcal.sty the fullyear key is set to false by default, but the corresponding branch in the macro \HebrewYearName was not fully executed. (line #53 of hebrewcal.sty). I added a \relax to correct the problem.

Tested with xelatex with Arial fonts and lualatex with the New Computer Modern fonts.

Expanded answer

To cover some of the common formats for the Hebrew year I added 2 keys:

(1) fullyear = false/true. True= displays the present millennium (5). False: suppress the 5, but display the millennium if it is less than 5000.

(default=false => \setkeys{hebrew}{fullyear=false})

(2) firstapos = false/true. False= suppress the first apostrophe in a full year display.

(default=false => \setkeys{hebrew}{firstapost=false} )

The global default is \setkeys{hebrew}{firstapost=false, fullyear=false}

Keys can be placed anywhere and will affect the document from that point onwards.

The macro \HebrewYearName{<year>} accepts a numeric value for a year or \hebrewyear the current year.
