To improve license mobility, license borrowing can be enabled for network licenses. License borrowing allows users to run MATLAB and other MathWorks products on computers that do not have a continuous connection to the license server. This article will provide information on:
- How to Enable License Borrowing
- Limitations of License Borrowing
- Interoperability with Previous Releases
How to Enable License Borrowing
To enable license borrowing, a License Administrator must contact MathWorks Installation and Licensing Support:
Once it is enabled, the license file on the license server must updated to include borrowing, the instructions for this are in the link below:
After you have implemented the borrow-enabled license file on the server, MATLAB users can enable the borrowing interface in MATLAB. For instructions on how to do this, please see the following support article:
How do I use the License Borrowing UI to borrow licenses from within MATLAB (as of R2009b or later)?
For more information download the PDF at the bottom of the page.
For a full copy of the license borrowing documentation see the link below:http://mathworks.com/help/install/license/borrow-licenses.html
Limitations of License Borrowing
- Borrowing is only available for Commercial and Non-Degree Granting Education licenses.
- Borrowing is available for Network Concurrent and Network Named User licenses.
- Borrowing is not available for Polyspace R2019a and later.
- To enable borrowing for a Network Named User license, an Installation and Licensing Support Technician must first verify that borrowing is supported in your environment.
- Licenses can be borrowed for a maximum of 30 days.
- Borrowing is only available for MATLAB R14 or later.
- Borrowing is only available for license servers running FLEXnet v9.2 or later.
- Network Named User licenses require FLEXnet v11.6.1 or later.
- MathWorks products must be installed on client systems. This configuration is called local client access in the MathWorks install documentation.
Interoperability with Previous Releases
When using a License File that supports license borrowing, you can only use license borrowing with Release 14 products or later. You can run Release 13 products but you cannot check out a borrowed license for these products. You cannot check out or run Release 12 (and earlier) products.
Before MATLAB clients are able to check out a license key from the license server with the Network Concurrent license, make sure that the License Manager is installed. Please see here for instructions:
How do I install or update the Network License Manager?
Once the License Manager is installed, copy the license.dat from the server (by default located in $MATLABROOT/etc, e.g. C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2019b\etc) to a folder on the clients.
Deactivate MATLAB:
As a next step, remove the old license activation from the MATLAB installations. For instructions, see the following article:
How do I deactivate MATLAB?
Re-activate MATLAB:
After the deactivation is complete, launch MATLAB. It will ask for a new activation. In the Activation programme, select ‘Activate manually without Internet’. Proceed with the steps. When prompted for the license file, point to the license.dat file. MATLAB should now use the Network Concurrent license.
