To implement the Tree-style tab panel (similar to the following Add-On to Firefox for instancehttps://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5890) you can use a combination of listbox and a panel for example. See the attached files tabtreepanel.m and tabtreepanel.fig for an example on how this can be done. The axes in the panel are updated based on what is chosen in the listbox.
Just reparent it in the 'SelectionChangedFcn' callback of the uitabgroup. It only needs to be parented by a tab if that tab is the currently selected one since you can never view 2 tabs at the same time.
