I have a cell array. Column 1 contains a string, and I would like to extract characters 4 through 8 of this column (in each row) and place this in column 10. I understand how to do make column 10 match column 1 with:

fdata(:,10) = fdata(:,1);

but how to I make fdata(:,10) just contain characters 4 through 8 of fdata(:,1)?

Use strjoin to merge the strings and a loop to go over the rows:

C = {'aaa', 'b', 'cccc';
     'string1', 'string2', 'string3'}
newcol = size(C, 2) + 1;
for row = 1 : size(C, 1)
   C{newcol, 4} = strjoin(C(row, :), '_');
end

Or using cellfun instead of a loop:

newC = cellfun(@(row) [row, strjoin(row, '_')], num2cell(C, 2), 'UniformOutput', false)
newC = vertcat(newC{:})

You could do this with your for-loop like this:

n = 0;
for ii = 2:2047
 for jj = 2:2047
  if(all(all(white(ii-1:ii+1,jj-1:jj+1))))
   n = n+1;
  end
 end
end
