Yes, you need to associate an email address to your MATLAB Central account to be eligible to download a trial release. Trial releases are a sales strategy, and Mathworks would want to be able to send you sales information about the trial.
However, trial releases are not available for versions that old, as mentioned for dbp. Trial releases for anything before the most recent release have to be processed through Mathworks Sales, which would very likely want an email address.
As mentioned by dbp, Standard and Education licenses perpetual licenses, or current Standard or Educational term licenses, entitle you to use any previous MATLAB release for the duration of the term. It is not entirely clear whether Home licenses are entitled to use MATLAB releases from before Home licenses were created. It is not clear whether Student licenses are entitled to use previous releases, but the guideline for those has generally been that if you can get a copy of the old installer than you can use it with your Student license.
Installation of licenses from before R2011a may require the assistance of Mathworks Support as those had a different license key setup.
The Activation Key is a string of 25 digits which authorizes an individual to access a MATLAB license. If your MathWorks Account is not linked to a MATLAB license, you will be prompted to provide an Activation Key. Additionally, under certain circumstances, you may be asked for an Activation Key, even if you are linked to a MATLAB license, for the following reasons:
- The MathWorks Account e-mail you have used to sign-in to the installer is not linked to a license with MATLAB on it.
- To resolve this issue, confirm your MathWorks Account is linked to a MATLAB license by signing in to the MathWorks License Center .
- The release of MATLAB you are installing is not available on your MATLAB license. Possible reasons include:
- You may be using a Trial license, which is release specific. Trial licenses can only be used for a specific version of MATLAB, typically the latest release. Please ensure the release of MATLAB you have installed on your computer matches the release you have been issued a Trial for. If you need to obtain Trial for a different release of MATLAB, please contact your Sales Representative .
- If you license does not have an active Software Maintenance Service (SMS) contract, you may be attempting to use a release of MATLAB which was released after your SMS contract expired. To resolve this issue, install an older release of MATLAB, or contact your Sales Representative to request a quote to update your SMS contract.
- Certain releases of MATLAB are not available for Student licenses. These releases are
- R2014b, R2013b, R2012b, R2011b, R2010b, R2009b, and R2008a and earlier.
- If MATLAB is already installed, and you are prompted an Activation Key (either in the Activation Client or in the License Center), your License Administrator may have set a restriction on the license to only allow activation with an Activation Key. By default, a key is not required to activate MATLAB. Contact your License Administrator to request for the Activation Key, or to have that permission turned off.
