MATLAB: Is DICOMREAD unable to read the JPEG-2000 encoded image using the Image Processing Toolbox 6.4 (R2009b)

When I try using DICOMREAD to read in my JPEG-2000 encoded image, I get the following error:
 j2convert
 ??? Error using ==> dicomread>newDicomread at 223
 Unsupported data encoding.
 Error in ==> dicomread at 78
     [X, map, alpha, overlays] = newDicomread(msgname, frames);
 Error in ==> j2convert at 4
 a=dicomread('K:\matlabexj2000\comp\DICOM\IMA00000034');

This enhancement has been incorporated in Release 2010b (R2010b). For previous product releases, read below for any possible workarounds:
JPEG-2000 encoded images are not supported in the Image Processing Toolbox 6.4 (R2009b). To work around the issue, use another program to convert the image to a supported format before reading it in using MATLAB.
