In Notebook, why are my figures split when rendering 3D graphics such as SURF or MESH?

The output figure looks like it has been cut in half and then the two halves swapped and placed back together again.

Although this issue was not reproducible here at the MathWorks, it may well be a bug with Notebook. If you are receiving this error please email support@mathworks.com with the following information:

1) Version of MATLAB

2) Version of MS Word

3) A sample .doc file which reproduces the problem

4) A description of the results you get when copying and pasting similar MATLAB figures into Word.

This problem has been reported to our development staff for further investigation.

Yes, this problem is all over the internet.

It seems to be an internal Matlab problem, maybe related to their graphics engine HG2. A discussion about this can be found here.

As a workaround I proposed a Matlab script for post-processing .eps files. Of course this does not solve problems with .svg or .pdf files. But .eps files could be manually converted to these formats by using other software (e.g. Illustrator, Inkscape).

Be aware that my tool groups elements according to their properties (e.g. line color, width, ...) which might not be what you want, since two separate lines with the same color might be grouped together in the same layer.

The underlying problem in Matlab seems to be that the exported data is separated into different path elements although logically they should be grouped together. As a result some vector graphics viewers have problems visually merging these clearly separated paths.

As a conclusion:

This issue needs to be fixed by MathWorks
The internal reasons why this happens are not visible to us

This bug has been fixed for Release 14 (R14). For previous releases, please read below for any possible workarounds:

This appears to be a bug in MATLAB 6.5 (R13). This problem occurs due to the visibility of the figure being set to 'off' and Notebook using an invisible figure for rendering. Hence, this will create a blank figure using the FIGURE command before evaluating the Notebook commands will render the correct figure into Notebook.

As a workaround, please follow the steps listed below:

1. Start Notebook by typing the following at the MATLAB prompt:

notebook

2. Create a blank figure:

figure

3. Enter the following commands in Notebook:

[u,t] = gensig('square',4,10,0.1);
H = [tf([2 5 1],[1 2 3]) ; tf([1 -1],[1 1 5])];
lsim(H,u,t);

4.Select 'Evaluate Cells' on the above commands

You should now see the LSIM plot being rendered into Notebook.
