Customizing Data Cursor Text

You can customize the text displayed by the data cursor using the datacursormode function. Use the last two items in the Data Cursor context menu to for this purpose:

. Edit Text Update Function — Opens an editor window to let you modify the function currently being used to place text in datatips

. Select Text Update Function — Opens an input file dialog for you to navigate to and select a MATLAB® file to use to format text in datatips you subsequently create

When a point on a line is selected with the data cursor tool, a Text Update Function is called in order to get the coordinates of the point and display them. The same function is called when you further click on the line and select other points. To open the corresponding script, right click on the marker and select "Edit Text Update Function".

A custom function can be used as the Text Update callback by right-clicking on the marker and choosing "Select Text Update Function". For instance, the attached script "NewCallback.m" plots a crosshair at the point selected with the data cursor.

This feature has been added in MATLAB 7.3 (R2006b). It is possible to bring up a callback editor from the data cursor context-menu which allows interactive editing of the data cursor text. You can use the last two items in the Data Cursor context menu, 'Edit Text Update Function' and 'Select Text Update Function,' for this purpose. For previous releases, please read below for workarounds.

To work around this issue, get the handle to the "datatip" and change its 'String' property, as the steps below illustrate:

m = findall(gcf,'Type','hggroup')     % Find the handle to the datatip
set(m,'String', 'My String')               % Change the "String' property to the desired string to be displayed

The example code above assumes that the "datatip" is the only "hggroup" object present in the figure. If there are more objects of Type "hggroup", then the example will have to be modified to get the handle of the specific "datatip" that you want to edit.
