MATLAB: How to check if the ports between the network license manager and client are blocked

I am not able to run MATLAB with my network license. I am able to ping the server from my client and ping the client from my server, but MATLAB still can't connect. I want to know how I can check if the ports are being blocked between my server and client.

In order to check for port issues you will need to have access to a display on both server and client machines. If you don't have a display on one of them you will not be able to use this solution. You will also need to have Java installed on both machines.

- On both machines navigate to http://sockettest.sourceforge.net

- Select WebStart Now

- On the server machine click on the Server tab, leave IP as all zeros

- On the client machine, click on Client tab, enter IP of your server

- You will need to make sure that your network license manager is not running because it will be using the port that we are trying to test, so be sure to stop the license manager before proceeding

- For your port number, you will need to get this from your license.dat that is currently setup on your server machine(don't rely on the client license file as it could be wrong)

- Port number will be the last number in your SERVER line (usually 27000)

- On the server machine, enter this port, then click Start Listening

- On the client machine, enter same port, then click Connect

- Try sending messages to each other, if this works proceed to next step, if not, contact your IT to resolve networking issues

- If this works, but MATLAB will not open you will need to test the DAEMON port, to do this, check if you already have a port specified in your license.dat, it will be listed in the DAEMON line with the following syntax: port=<portnumber> (if this is not listed, you can use any port you think is open)

- Back in SocketTest, enter DAEMON port, run the same test again, try sending messages between server and client.

- If you get prompted to allow connection before running any of these tasks, you have security software that is in place to prevent network communication, in which case you need to talk to IT (even if you are able to run SocketTest after allowing the connection). Your IT should be able to either setup a rule to allow MATLAB to pass through or to open these 2 ports.

MATLAB: Can the network license manager be configured to work inside a firewall

It should be possible to run the network license manager inside a firewall with MATLAB clients outside of the firewall, however the MathWorks has not officially tested the full-time use of the network license manager through a firewall. Thus this configuration is not fully supported.

The network license manager operates using two TCP ports. In order to use a firewall with FLEXnet, you will need to configure your license to use static ports and then open these in the firewall. To do so, follow the steps below:

The first port the license manager uses is specified as the last argument of the SERVER line in the license file. This port is used for the initial connection to the license server. For example this line below:

 SERVER license-server-1 0011aabbcc22 27000

shows that the license manager is using port 27000. If you do not have a port number on the end of this line, you will need to specify a port. By default MathWorks uses port 27000 upon installation, however you can specify any open port on the machine.

To verify which ports are in use on your system, you can use the "netstat" utility. This utility is called from the DOS prompt for Windows, or through a terminal window on Linux/Unix/Mac. To use the utility, execute the following command:

netstat -a -p tcp

The other license manager port is specified in DAEMON line of the license file. By default, the vendor DAEMON (MLM) uses a random open port. In order to use a firewall, you must specify an open port on your system for MLM. This specification is done in the license file by adding the flag 'port=' to the end of the DAEMON line. For example:

 DAEMON MLM "C:\Program Files\etc\win32\mlm.exe" port=1711

In this example, MLM is tied to port 1711. Again, this must be a free port on the machine. If a port number which is already in use is chosen, a "port in use" error message will be generated when the license manager is restarted.

If you changed the ports, you will need to restart the license manager for the changes to take effect. Once the license manager is started successfully with the changes, you will need to open the ports in the firewall. Once open, you should be able to check out a license through a firewall.

NOTE: If client machines have a firewall, you will need to open the two ports on the client firewall as well.

MATLAB: Do I receive License Manager Error -3

There are a few reasons why this error can occur:

1) The DAEMON line in your license.dat file is incorrect or missing.

For license server, the DAEMON line should read:

Windows

---------

 DAEMON MLM $MATLAB\etc\win{32|64}\mlm.exe ($MATLAB\flexlm\mlm.exe for releases prior to R2010b on Windows)

(where $MATLAB is the MATLAB installation directory)

Linux/Mac

------------------

 DAEMON MLM $MATLAB/etc/glnx{86|a64}/MLM

(where $MATLAB is the MATLAB installation directory)

(NOTE: prior to R2011a, the DAEMON line on Linux/Mac was "DAEMON MLM $MATLAB/etc/glnx{86|a64}/lm_matlab")

NOTE: Once you have made changes to your license file, be sure to restart the network license manager for these changes to take effect. For more information on how to restart the license manager, see the Related Solution listed below.

2) The SERVER line in the license.dat file on a client does not match the license.dat file on the server.

If you are running MATLAB using a concurrent license and you are on a client machine, make sure the SERVER line in your license.dat file matches that of the license.dat file on your license server.

The license file on the client machine varies depending upon operating system and version. For R2008a and above, the license file is generally called network.lic and is located in $MATLAB\licenses (where $MATLAB is the MATLAB installation directory). For versions prior to R2008a, the license file will generally be the following:

Windows

---------

 $MATLAB\bin\win32 (for 32-bit MATLAB)
 $MATLAB\bin\win64 (for 64-bit MATLAB)

Linux/Unix/Mac

------------------

 $MATLAB/etc

(where $MATLAB is the MATLAB installation directory)

The license.dat file on the server machine is located in:

 $MATLABROOT/etc ($MATLAB\flexlm for releases prior to R2010b on Windows)

(where $MATLAB is the MATLAB installation directory)

3) The TCP port number used to communicate with the license server is already being used by another application.
