MATLAB: Do I get an “Exiting due to Signal 39” error when trying to start the Network License Manager

In my log file I am seeing the following errors. What can I do to fix this problem?

10:51:06 (MLM) Server unable to setup IPC channel

10:51:06 (MLM) EXITING DUE TO SIGNAL 39 Exit reason 7

10:51:06 (lmgrd) MLM exited with status 39 (Couldn't find a master)

10:51:06 (lmgrd) Restarted MLM (internet tcp_port 52449 pid 5099)

10:51:06 (lmgrd) MLM exited with status 0 signal = 17

10:51:06 (lmgrd) Please correct problem and restart daemons

Generally "Exiting due to Signal XX Exit reason X" indicates a problem with the network connection. This error will occur when you try to start the Network License Manager software. lmgrd will start normally, but MLM will not start successfully.

You may also get a License Manager Error -15 when checking the status of the server (using the "lmstat" command in Unix or LMtools.exe in Windows).

As part of the startup process for MLM, the Network License Manager will need to connect to localhost. If it isn't able to connect or doesn't know where to find the localhost, this error will occur. To resolve this, you will need to edit your Hosts file. On Linux, the default location for the Hosts file is:

 /etc/hosts

At the top of the Hosts file, add the following line if it is missing:

(DISCLAIMER: Editing your hosts file can cause adverse effects to your system. If you are unfamiliar with hosts files, make a copy of your hosts file before proceeding or contact your system administrator for assistance. MathWorks takes no responsibility for damage caused to your operating system by a malformed hosts file.)

 127.0.0.1  localhost

With the new line added, try restarting the License Manager. If the error persists, the problem may be with your network and not the server itself. In that case, consult your network administrator.

This issue may occur if there is a port conflict or you are using old License Manager version with a newer license file.

The license manager (lmgrd) will start and run on the port number at the end of the SERVER line. This error message may occur if another program is trying to use that port, creating a port conflict. To resolve the issue, you can change this to an available port by editing the SERVER line in the license.dat file.

NOTE: If this number is changed in the SERVER line in the license.dat file on the license server, the network.lic file for all MATLAB installations must also be updated.

Each new MATLAB version comes shipped with a new version of the network license manager. If you are running an older version of the license manager, but have continued to update your license file, you may see this issue. In this case, try installing the new license manager software.

MATLAB: Do I receive License Manager Error -3

There are a few reasons why this error can occur:

1) The DAEMON line in your license.dat file is incorrect or missing.

For license server, the DAEMON line should read:

Windows

---------

 DAEMON MLM $MATLAB\etc\win{32|64}\mlm.exe ($MATLAB\flexlm\mlm.exe for releases prior to R2010b on Windows)

(where $MATLAB is the MATLAB installation directory)

Linux/Mac

------------------

 DAEMON MLM $MATLAB/etc/glnx{86|a64}/MLM

(where $MATLAB is the MATLAB installation directory)

(NOTE: prior to R2011a, the DAEMON line on Linux/Mac was "DAEMON MLM $MATLAB/etc/glnx{86|a64}/lm_matlab")

NOTE: Once you have made changes to your license file, be sure to restart the network license manager for these changes to take effect. For more information on how to restart the license manager, see the Related Solution listed below.

2) The SERVER line in the license.dat file on a client does not match the license.dat file on the server.

If you are running MATLAB using a concurrent license and you are on a client machine, make sure the SERVER line in your license.dat file matches that of the license.dat file on your license server.

The license file on the client machine varies depending upon operating system and version. For R2008a and above, the license file is generally called network.lic and is located in $MATLAB\licenses (where $MATLAB is the MATLAB installation directory). For versions prior to R2008a, the license file will generally be the following:

Windows

---------

 $MATLAB\bin\win32 (for 32-bit MATLAB)
 $MATLAB\bin\win64 (for 64-bit MATLAB)

Linux/Unix/Mac

------------------

 $MATLAB/etc

(where $MATLAB is the MATLAB installation directory)

The license.dat file on the server machine is located in:

 $MATLABROOT/etc ($MATLAB\flexlm for releases prior to R2010b on Windows)

(where $MATLAB is the MATLAB installation directory)

3) The TCP port number used to communicate with the license server is already being used by another application.
