Why does MATLAB hang when I switch keyboard layouts in GNU/Linux?

I frequently switch my keyboard layout between languages. If the MATLAB desktop is running when I switch, it will hang. I must then kill the MATLAB process.

This bug has been fixed for Release 14 (R14). For previous releases, please read below for any possible workarounds:

This has been verified as a bug in in MATLAB 6.1-6.5.1 (R12-R13SP1) when switching keyboard layouts in GNU/Linux.

Currently, to workaround this use the 'setxkbmap' command to change the keyboard layout.
