Why do I receive the error "java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError" when trying to start MATLAB?

This error will manifest if you are using the MATLAB_JAVA environment variable to specify a non-default MATLAB Java version. We strongly recommend that you unset the variable and use the default MATLAB Java version, as using alternative Java virtual machines can cause issues within MATLAB.

This error is ocurring because of a corrupt preference setting in the MATLAB preferences file. To fix this problem, start MATLAB and run the following statement in the Command Window, after the exceptions display:

com.mathworks.services.Prefs.setStringPref('HelpSelectedProducts','MATLAB');

After running the statement, quit MATLAB and then restart it. The problem should be fixed.
