This issue is currently being investigated by MathWorks; the current workaround is to start MATLAB using the '-nosplash' flag.
Open a Terminal window (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) and run the following command:
$MATLAB/bin/matlab -nosplash
Where $MATLAB is the path to your MATLAB directory. For example, if you are using MATLAB R2016b and have installed MATLAB in the default directory, the command will be:
To resolve this, check the thread limit using the command 'ulimit -a' at the Linux command line. This command will report various resource limits applied to all users of the system. These limits may be preventing MATLAB from creating enough threads or using enough memory to handle multiple instances. For details on these limits and how to increase them, please refer to the following link in conjunction with your Linux distribution's man page on 'ulimit':
Yeah this has to do with hardware rendering, most notably with mesa opengl. I have yet to have my Radeon card work with hardware rendering and MATLAB, even though I have full opengl 4.5 support.
Run this command and restart to sidestep the issue. It's not a fix, but it gets you on your feet:
