MATLAB: Defining a save name

figuresaveas

file_name = input('what is the file name? \n')

SAVEAS(figure(1),file_name,'fig')

hi i am a complete novice at matlab, i have the code above which i want to use to save my figure, i want however the user to define the file name?.. is this even possible any help would be great, thanks in advance

file_name = input('what is the file name? \n','s')

Note the 's' at the end of input. It will return a string now not a number which can be used as a valid file name. Welcome to MATLAB Answers!

The ' sprintf ' function is used for formatting certain input data to string. I am not entirely sure about your use of the 'sprintf' function to define the name for the pdf file. Since your figure is getting saved as a .fig file, I would recommend you to use the following syntax for the ' saveas ' function.

>> saveas(gcf,'MyPDFFileName','pdf');

The above code will save the current figure in a file MyPDFFileName.pdf. Depending on the type & dimensions of the 'name' variable in the code snippet you have provided, you can set the name of the PDF file accordingly.

Since the names may be different lengths name needs to be a cell array. Try name{i} instead of name(i).
