I would like to compile a standalone application in the Student Version of MATLAB.

You cannot compile a standalone application with the Student Version of MATLAB because the MATLAB Compiler, MATLAB C/C++ Math Libraries, and MATLAB C/C++ Graphic Libraries, which are needed to compile standalone code, are not able to be used with the Student Version of MATLAB.
At university I used a pic18f8722 and it provided me with a good introduction. It's ideal for embedded systems and you can use the MPLAB® X integrated development environment for programming. Strongly recommend getting/building a suitable I/O board.
The ability to run an uncompiled MATLAB program against a MATLAB Compiler built standalone application and the MATLAB Compiler Runtime is not available, as of MATLAB Compiler 4.8 (R2008a).
You will need to recompile the standalone application.
