I would like to have the option to acquire live video and bring it into a Simulink model using the Video and Image Processing Blockset. This functionality would enable me to run a real-time video processing algorithm on my video and generate code from my model.

This enhancement has been incorporated in Release 2008b (R2008b). For previous product releases, read below for any possible workarounds:

This functionality is available in the Image Acquisition Toolbox and the Image Acquisition Blockset. With the blockset, you can use the Live Video block to accomplish this task. You can generate code from this block, but it will only run on Windows OS platforms and interface with nonreal-time Image Acquisition Blockset drivers.

If you are using Simulink version R2008b or later, please download the attached files, which demonstrate the process of creating a series of images from a video, and then producing a video from that series of images. Running the file vipFileVideoWorkflow.m demonstrates the use of the two models.

For previous product releases, if you wish to process your images as a single video stream, you must preload your image files into a structure supported by the From Workspace block in Simulink. The following code is an example of this process:

im2 = imread('foo_002.jpg');
im3 = imread('foo_003.jpg);
% Insert the image data into a multidimensional matrix
imdata(:,:,1) = im1;

This is a known limitation of the Video Input Simulink block provided with Image Acquisition Toolbox. The Video Input Simulink block currently works with DirectX compatible hardware only. It is not compatible with any other hardware supported by the Image Acquisition Toolbox.

In order to work around this issue, a Simulink User-Defined Functions block can be used to execute Image Acquisition Toolbox functions directly from Simulink.
