[Tex/LaTex] Windows 7: problem with TeXnicCenter, MiKTeX2.9

Please help! They have updated my computer to Windows 7, and I have tried to reinstall MiKTeX2.9 and TeXnicCenter. When I run a LaTeX program, it tries to install 412 files from CTAN, and I get the error:

pdflatex.exe: A timeout was reached while receiving data from the server

And then I get a LaTeX error that pgfcore.sty was not found.

Is it some permissions problem with Windows 7? I have administrative privileges that I could use, but I don't seem to be prompted for my password…

This is driving me crazy! Any help is much appreciated.

I doubt that it is due to permissions problems. The message says "timeout" and this indicates a connection problem. It could mean that the server/repository you are trying to use is simply down (that happens). But it also could be due to a proxy or a VPN-tunnel (I can't install packages on my work PC when I'm connected to our intranet).

Try to install the pgf-package directly with the package manager. Try different repositories (menu repository). If both doesn't work: Get from CTAN the files

systems/win32/miktex/tm/packages/miktex-zzdb2-2.9.tar.lzma
systems/win32/miktex/tm/packages/miktex-zzdb1-2.9.tar.lzma
systems/win32/miktex/tm/packages/pgf.tar.lzma

and perhaps other package from systems/win32/miktex/tm/packages/. Put them all in an empty folder outside your miktex. Then use the package manager to install them by using the folder as "local repository".

I guess I will answer my question, although it isn't solved as such - but at least I can use TeXcount on windows via what seems to me a very linuxy method!

I installed ActivePerl
I have MikTex installed which has texcount.exe as listed in the question
I hunted around for texcount.pl but still haven't found it - which makes me wonder whether the executable actually contains compiled perl?
I did attempt to run the commands as stated in the original question, and MiKTex did claim to be doing a package install, but I stopped watching so I don't know what it actually did!

Anyway, the outcome is that I can now fire up a command prompt, go to the directory containing my tex file, and run texcount -html my_file.tex >my_file_wc.html and get sensible readable output.

The following command worked for me, under cygwin. I installed pandoc 1.13.2 and MiKTeX 2.9.5105 64-bit. Then I ran:

pandoc -s \
--latex-engine='C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex\bin\x64\pdflatex.exe'  \
-f markdown_github -t latex \
"my-file.md" -o "my-file.pdf"

The key here is that I gave the full path for MiKText's pdflatex.exe in the --latex-engine key, in quotes, using the windows path (as the pandoc I installed is the windows pandoc, it requires windows-style paths to find resources).

I used -f markdown_github because of the file format of my-file.md

I used -t latext but that's optional AFAIK.
