[Tex/LaTex] Which fonts are at the disposal with pdfLaTeX without having to resort to manual installation of them

Apparently, installing fonts manually (by converting them to fd files and so on) on LaTeX is a bit of a hassle. But still, I would like to be able to use fonts other than the standard Computer Modern (although it is a nice font).

So what fonts can I use without having to install them manually? By this I mean, which fonts are installed by standard, and which fonts can I access by including a package?

Have a look on the LaTeX Font Catalogue and also the fonts directory on CTAN for a list of available fonts. Many of them can be loaded like packages. I only have experience with cm-super and lmodern.

Here is a quick and dirty bash script to copy the files into the local TeX tree and call the commands to activate the configuration. If you save the file as installprodint in the directory where you put prodint.tgz, run it using sudo bash installprodint from this directory.

The cleaner way is to build a Debian package (also usable with Ubuntu) that installs the font and the necessary style files. See here how to make a Debian/Ubuntu package.

I wonder why the package is not on CTAN. Maybe you could ask the author of the package to put the package on CTAN so it can be included in TeX Live.

[Tex/LaTex] How to invoke cm-super

If the cm-super fonts are correctly installed they will be used automatically as soon as you try to use the computer modern fonts with T1-encoding. There is no need to invoke them in a special way. Try this document:

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\begin{document}
blub
\end{document}

Then check the log-file. With cm-super you should see that at the end a cm-super font is mentioned:

J:/MiKTeX2.9/fonts/type1/public/cm-super/sfrm1000.pfb

Without cm-super there would be a .pk at this place.
