[Tex/LaTex] Where is “texmf” on a Windows install

On UNIX you have the texmf folder in your home directory where you store packages you've installed yourself, but where is that folder on a Windows install?

_{Yeah, I know that if you use MiKTeX then you don't need to worry about it since it installs needed packages on-the-fly, but I'm still interested. =)}

'texmf' is not the exact directory name, but refer to the root paths of the TeX distribution. There are often more than one 'texmf' tree, and they are often not called 'texmf'. In MiKTeX, you can find all texmf tree in MiKTeX's option (Start menu -> MiKTeX -> Maintenance -> settings):

You should copy the first two folder levels of the main tree (in your example tex/latex). Everything below this point is optional. You can use additional subfolders and name them at your liking. Use your sense of order. I would certainly make at least a subfolder "beamer".

The "personal tree" on Mac OS X is rooted in the Library folder for each user. However the installer doesn't touch the users' home directories, so the

~/Library/texmf

folder has to be created. Inside it one has to rebuild the usual TDS structure, so llncs.cls should go into

~/Library/texmf/tex/latex/llncs

and all folders must be created manually. So, open Library in your folder, create texmf, open it, create tex, open it, create latex, open it, create llncs and finally put llncs.cls in the last created folder.

This is necessary in order that the TeX programs can correctly find the file.

Note that no "hashing" operation needs to be performed: the "personal tree" is always searched, since it's assumed not to be very big.

On GNU/Linux systems one should omit the "Library" level.
