[Tex/LaTex] Using psfrag with pdflatex

Is there any way of using psfrag with pdflatex?
It seems fairly similar to the problem of using pstricks with pdflatex.
Do they both depend on the same things, or does psfrag include pstricks?

Can I assume that if I use one of the workarounds to make pstricks work, the same workaround would do for psfrag?
Is there an equivalent of \usepackage[pdf]{pstricks} that will work for psfrag?

I realise there are a few questions here rather than just one, but they all share the overall question of how to use psfrag with pdflatex. Thank you.

I recommend (disclaimer, I wrote them both) either of the pstool or the auto-pst-pdf packages. The latter is more useful when you have other PSTricks material; pstool is better when you only have psfrag material only. (One day I'd like to extend pstool to handle both cases.)

They both use the -shell-escape feature to process the psfrag graphics separately before inserting them into the document.

texify (or pdftexify) is merely a program that will run (pdf)latex (and, if necessary, bibtex, makeindex, and what not) for however many times it takes to get all cross-references, citations, index commands, etc sorted out and resolved properly. Hence, as long as you've set your pdflatex program to run properly with pstricks, e.g., by specifying pdflatex -shell-escape, you shouldn't encounter any problems with pdftexify.

To get correct typeset psfrag (and pstricks) stuff when compiling tex-->pdf directly, you should use the package auto-pst-pdf, which in a first run creates a file \jobname-pics.pdf, which collects all eps files converted to pdf embedding pstricks stuff.

You only need \usepackage{auto-pst-pdf} in your preamble.
If this -pics.pdf is created an you don't change your pics any more, you may set the option [off] to the call of \usepackage[off]{auto-pst-pdf} to get faster compilation.

To give a working exmaple:
