[Tex/LaTex] Using LuaLaTeX and knitr together

I would like to include R results in a LuaLaTeX document, which I prefer over XeLaTeX mainly because of the greater support of the package microtype.
Do you know whether and how is it possible?

Moreover, for more structured documents, I like to call the chapters' .tex files with the command \input in a master file, which is then compiled. Therefore, I would also like to know, in case you have a solution to the first problem, if it allows such tree structure.

I am especially interested in solutions that refer to Sweave files compilation.

Besides supporting a Lua interpreter, LuaTeX brings to pdfTeX quite the same changes as XeLaTeX (native Unicode support, support for system fonts).

For this reason, the question you linked to applies to LuaTeX as well, modulo the answers to this question about migrating from XeTeX to LuaTeX, which shows that apart from microtype support and font names, LuaTeX- and XeTeX-specific codes are mostly compatible.

babel works fine with LuaTeX as far as I can tell. At least with frenchb, I haven't had any issues.

Besides fontspec (which also works with XeTeX), there's more and more packages that use Lua to provide features. As an example, I have recently released the impnattypo package which has some LuaTeX specific features (thanks to Patrick), and I have more coming (such as the unreleased overcolored package).

To tell LuaTeX to accept other encodings than UTF8 you need an additional package. Similar to the inputenc for LaTeX luainputenc provides the necessary commands for LuaTeX. The basic syntax is just \usepackage[<encoding>]{luainputenc}. Where the most commonly used encodings are latin1 and cp1252. The slightly changed example compiles without errors:

Alternatively you could use tools such as iconv to automatically convert the file.
