[Tex/LaTex] Using \frac within a table

Does \frac not work from within a table? I need to reproduce the formulae for various methods on this page – here. I for example use

Normalized Square Difference & \frac{\sum_{x',y'} (A(x',y')-B(x+x',y+y'))^2}{\sum_{x',y'} (A(x',y')-B(x+x',y+y'))^2}\\

but I see no fraction in the table. Any suggestions?

Equations need to be in math mode, so you should surround the equations with dollar ($) signs:

Normalized Square Difference & $\frac{\sum_{x',y'} (A(x',y')-B(x+x',y+y'))^2}{\sum_{x',y'} (A(x',y')-B(x+x',y+y'))^2}$\\

I have solved this in the past by modifying the value of \arraystretch

you can do this by adding to your source :

{\renewcommand{\arraystretch}{1.2} %<- modify value to suit your needs
\begin{tabular}{|c|c|}
...
\end{tabular}
}

Edit:

Actually having researched this a bit more it seems that having equations in the cells has unexpected behaviour, where the space is increase disproportionally at the top (value set to 3 to start getting the space at the bottom):

more recently I have started to use the tabu package to replace all tables (from tabular to tabularx to longtable). It also provide a few more controls. in this case the \tabulinesep has a much more appropirate effect on the results:

which produces the following result:

[Tex/LaTex] Issue in using longtable within table environment

table encloses its contents in a box which will not break across pages, but which can "float" to a convenient location. longtable gets rid of this box, is able to break across pages, and does not float. Hence enclosing longtable inside a table defeats the entire purpose. Remove table environment.

longtable provides a \caption facility and hence you can add a \label too.
