[Tex/LaTex] Typeset is disabled for TexShop in macOS Big Sur 11.0.1

The typeset button is not highlighted and does not compile new text. I can open an existing source file and it displays the corresponding pdf. But when I edit the source, it does not compile. Even a newly created source does not compile.

I just moved my system from my old MacBook to a new one.

TexShop version is 4.51.

New computer:
MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020), macOS BigSur Version 11.0.1, TexShop 4.51 (4.51)
Typeset button is dimmed.
Does not compiled new source code. Will read and compile an existing source file.

Old computer:
MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017), macOS Catalina Version 10.15.7,TexShop 4.51 (4.51)
Typeset button is not dimmed. Just as bright as other buttons.
Does not compiled new source code. Will read and compile an existing source file.

I have tried creating a new source file and compiling it. This does not work.

I have put the TexShop application and folder in the trash, and re-installed a new one from the website. Did not work.

Can anyone get TexShop to work under macOS Big Sur?

Any fixes out there?

Any help appreciated.

Nathan later notified me that the program is now working. He installed BasicTeX and threw away the old Preference File, forcing TeXShop to generate a new one. One of these actions solved the problem.

NIST's guide for the use of SI recommends (on page 35) that "symbols representing purely descriptive terms (for example, the chemical elements) are roman". This would most likely apply to subatomic particles as well. To do this, I would use \mathrm:

$\mathrm{e^-}$, $\mathrm{p^+}$, $\mathrm{n^0}$.

Of course, that looks like it might get tedious, so I'd probably define macros for them:

\newcommand\elec{\mathrm{e^-}}
\newcommand\prot{\mathrm{p^+}}
\newcommand\neut{\mathrm{n^0}}

which would allow you to quickly and universally change them if you decided that some other typesetting convention was better.

Personally, I'd prefer sans-serif, but then I'm no chemist or particle physicist.

[Tex/LaTex] Big list of beautifully typeset package documentations

I find it pleasing and enthralling every time the documentation of a package implicitly makes use of some of its own features, thereby whetting my appetite en passant so to speak. Perhaps this is the opposite of some sort of performative contradiction, maybe one can call it performative congruence? However, two of my stars are the following:

– microtype. One of my favorite packages; apart from being well structured and comprehensive, the documentation is also extremely neatly typeset due to its own features! It shows implicitly what the package is supposed to support!

– selnolig. Same here. The package supports selective suppression of ligatures with a few simple key-strokes. By employing a wide array of ligatures in different languages throughout the document, one becomes acutely aware what is possible with ligatures in the first place!
