The commands
$\mathcal{\mbox{$M$}}$
and
\mbox{$\mathcal{M}$}
produce different output. I would like a replacement for \mbox that creates a box preserving all features of the current font in math mode. How can I do this?

When using \text{} you just switch to the family around the mathmode. You could always use \textrm to force the serif family. So I would write

\usepackage{mathtools}

With standard fonts you can switch to bold mathematics via \mathversion{bold}:

\mathbf{x}\cdot\mathbf{y} = 1 \).

Alternatively consider using a different font set-up. One is provided by the fourier package:
