[Tex/LaTex] LyX – changing subsection from numbers to letters

I have a problem set that I want to type up.

In my section, i get numbers which is fine since I have 4 problems on my problem set. But each subsection is lettered on my problem set, so I would like my solution set to also match it.

Right now it turns into 1.1, 1.2 …

Also when I select subsection and try to do a display type formula, it moves my section number in the middle too. If I press enter on it it just removes the subsection. What to do?

I don't know whether LyX has any buttons for this type of thing, but for the first part of your question, you can add

\renewcommand\thesubsection{\thesection.\alph{subsection}}

to the preamble (under Document > Settings). If you have chapters, you should add \thechapter. before \thesection.

I don't understand your second question: When I add a display math under a subsection heading everything works fine (and it obviously fails to compile when I add it inside a subsection heading). I might be missing something though—I have never actually used LyX.

Looks like \numberwithin is not meant to be used the way you are trying to use it. (I'm surprised too!) The problem is that it essentially does two things:

Calls \renewcommand*\the<slave counter>{\the<master counter>.\arabic{slave counter}}
Calls \@addtoreset{<slave counter>}{<master counter>}

The second one is what change the numbering. Notice that it is "addtoreset". Which means that it will make the increment operation on the master counter trigger a reset of the slave counter. So after calling \numberwithin{equation}{section}, the trigger has been laid. And a second call of \numberwithin{equation}{chapter} does not remove the previous trigger. Therefore the equation counter will still be reset everytime the section counter increases.

So much for why it does what you see that it does. For a solution, clearly you must stop using the convenient \numberwithin command. A substitute is the \counterwithin and \counterwithout commands provided by the chngcntr package.

So you should define, in your preamble, the following commands:

\newcommand*\startappendixeqnumbering{%
    \counterwithout{equation}{chapter}%
    \counterwithin{equation}{section}%
    \renewcommand*\theequation{\thechapter.\thesection.\arabic{equation}}}
\newcommand*\startnormaleqnumbering{%
    \counterwithout{equation}{section}%
    \counterwithin{equation}{chapter}%
    \renewcommand*\theequation{\thechapter.\arabic{equation}}}

\counterwithin{equation}{chapter}  %Set the default

And call \startappendixeqnumbering before the first appendix and \startnormaleqnumbering after the last appendix, before the start of the next chapter.

That is the way it is supposed to work. LyX is not a LaTeX interpreter, it will not be able to parse your preamble and understand the new commands that you define there.

If you want LyX to understand new LaTeX commands and environments, you will need to create a new LyX layout or template file that will create an "interface" between your LaTeX commands and LyX. Read the Customization section of LyX Help, section on "Installing New Document Classes, ...".
