[Tex/LaTex] Installing TexLive (windows)

I most likely caused this problem for myself, but I would welcome any suggestions to help dig me out of this hole.

First of all, I tried to install texlive 2011 and got the error message that my local version was different from the version in the repository (should have read the instructions first…). In any case, my easy fix was to just wipe out my entire C:\texlive folder. Problem solved, right? Not so much.

I then read that I should have used the Add/Remove programs option in Windows to get rid of TeX Live, which I then did. I also removed any reference to C:\texlive from the PATH. However, I'm still getting

the local installation
and the repository being accessed are not compatible:
      local: 2010
 repository: 2011
Perhaps you need to use a different CTAN mirror?

Where else do I need to go so that my computer doesn't still think TL 2010 is still installed?

I seems that you got an installation file from a CTAN mirror that hadn't yet updated to TL 2011. Redownload it and try to be more lucky the next time (most mirrors should have updated by now).

Conversely, when you get the error message

the local installation
and the repository being accessed are not compatible:
      local: 2011
 repository: 2010

then just restart the installation process until you hit an updated mirror.

I run TeX Live 2011 but also have most, if not all, the synaptic-managed packages from Ubuntu 11.04 on the systems. By having the paths set up correctly most software packages work well, especially those run from the command line that are part of TeX Live (I went through this in more detail in a response to a related question).

However, if you read through that answer you will notice that some software tools do not follow the set path; they have internal settings that could reference, in both our cases, the wrong versions of other tools and packages.

The version of TeXworks I run does this but has a simple configuration setting to modify.

I rarely use Kile but if you look at the menu for the synaptic-installed Kile at Settings -> Configure Kile -> Kile -> Help that the default path to the LaTeX help system is set to /usr/share/doc/texlive-doc. This is wrong on my system and may be on yours but is simply changed. On running a simple pdflatex build the output window shows This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-1.40.10 (TeX Live 2009/Debian) which is not the version I would want it to run by default for live work. I do not know of a single configuration setting that can change this. A Kile support discussion suggested several workrounds that you may want to consider including running it from the console, as Peter commented above.

The problem lies in the fact that you chose to create symbolic links for the executables in /usr/local/texlive/2011/bin/<architecture> to /usr/local/bin.

With tlmgr there's the possibility to update them, but the action is not performed automatically.

However, my advices are:

Always install the full TeX Live
Never create symbolic links, particularly on Debian based systems

If you don't have strict space constraints, do a full TeX Live install. It would have avoided the problem of installing the XeTeX subsystem.

Changing what's in /usr/local/bin is dangerous as other system utilities may choose to install something there. It's better to change the PATH variable and the safest method is to write a file zzz-texlive.sh containing

export PATH=/usr/local/texlive/2011/bin/`uname -i`-linux:$PATH
export MANPATH=/usr/local/texlive/2011/texmf/doc/man:$MANPATH
export INFOPATH=/usr/local/texlive/2011/texmf/doc/info:$INFOPATH
unset TEXINPUTS
unset TEXMFCONFIG

and move it into /etc/profile.d. After a logout/login cycle, the PATH variable will contain the correct directory for the executables.
