[Tex/LaTex] Compressing table to text width in tabular environment

I am trying to reduce the size of a wide table to match the width of my text for my thesis. I have looked at other posts but none of the code seems to work for me. I have tried different combinations of the \textwidth and \resizebox commands but have had no luck. My code is as follows:

Using a tabularx environment should do the job, without having to resort to \resizebox. Incidentally, since you're using a table* environment, I'm assuming you're using twocolumn as one of the options passed to \documentclass.
