[Tex/LaTex] Biblatex-Chicago Author-Date in Footnote

I have looked at Guidelines for customizing biblatex styles but still need some help. I want a second non-consecutive footnote to be Author Year, p.

Best Answer

First off the obligatory warning. With this change you deviate from the CMS citation requirements. Use at your own risk.

Secondly, since biblatex-chicago is purpose-built to implement the wishes of the CMS the result presented here might (a) not be entirely pleasing from an aesthetic as well as a usability point of view, you are essentially mixing an "authoryear" and "authordate" style here and (b) not give the expected result in corner cases.

First off we need to make sure we can do year disambiguation (otherwise we get into trouble with two works from the same year by the same set of authors), so we need the option labeldate.

Then we only need to change the cite:short macro to include the year instead of the title and add the extrayear information to the bibliography. Finally we make sure the separator between name and year is a space.

There are a couple of things here:

You are using bibtex instead of what it seems you want to use, biblatex. For this, you first need to change the path to the executable file. I cannot tell you how to do this because I do not know what type of editor you are using, but for example, if using TeXnicCenter it's just a matter of changing this on the profile settings.
If you actually want to use bibtex (which I personally prefer... but many folks around here just love biblatex) you need to:

2.1 Instead of \usepackage[style=chicago-authordate]{biblatex} change it for \usepackage{natbib}

2.2 You need to create a .bib file which contains the bibliography entries.

2.3 In order to not get the warnings, you actually need to \cite any of the authors of your .bib file (thus eliminating the problem of not finding \citation commands) , and of course this file should not be empty (thus eliminating the problem of not finding \bibdata and finally you have to set a \bibliographystyle, that since you are using the natbib package mentioned at the beginning, you'll get the options to choose the style you want.

2.3.1 As it seems the style you need is Chicago, this could be implemented by \bibliographystyle{chicagoa}
Now, if you want to use biblatex it is usually recommended to go along with biber. This could be a good starting point: Setting up biber as a default biblatex backend in the configuration file

Instead of \AtEveryBibitem{\clearfield{urldate}} you might want to try

This makes sure the urldate is deleted (well, actually its parts urlyear, urlmonth and urlday are) only for non-@online entries.

Generally, one needs to be somewhat careful with .bib files exported by external programmes as these sometimes do not adhere to best practice.

Your sources look quite good though, save for issn = {0027-8424, 1091-6490}, in enikolopov_field_2013, isbn = {9781107306882 1107306884 9781107314634 1107314631 9781139343824 1139343823}, in simpser_why_2013 and several language = {en},. ISSN and ISBN fields should not contain several ISSN/ISBNs at once as these fields are printed verbosely and you certainly do not want to see all 6 different ISBNs in the bibliography, use the ISBN that the copy of the book you worked with had on its back. While in the language field the "[l]anguages may be specified literally or as localization keys" (the biblatex documentation, §2.2.2 Data Fields, p. 19), the localisation key version is preferable for localisation purposes, so english is better than en.
