bibdesk
BibDesk usually provides preview formats in TeX, HTML, doc, and RTF. Sometimes, we want to use the complete citation in presentation slides. It would be easier to have previews in plain text.
How do I get citation previews in plain text, which has the same text output as in TeX preview? This is especially useful with copying and pasting citations into presentation slides as line breaks are not included (unlike in TeX preview)
It is possible to use biblatex with Bibdesk to generate the TeX preview.
Go to Preferences --> TeX preview
Then if you want to use XeLaTeX change the executable for pdflatex to xelatex
Then you have to change the TeX template. Based on what you have provided a suitable template is.

After that you are ready to generate the preview (I am not been able to use biber as backend). Also I would suggest to use pdflatex instead of xelatex given that the generation with xelatex is slower.
In the BibDesk preferences there is a Preview panel. Choose apalike as the BiBTeX style:

Select your new template in the File Format drop-down menu. The bibliography will be exported in the same format as BibDesk default preview, but in plain text.
