[Tex/LaTex] Automatically define macros in LyX documents

I'm using LyX all the time and over the last 2 years I've accumulated some very handy macros for my lecture notes. As it is today, every time I start a new document, I copy and paste the macros from one of my other documents. Is it possible, somehow, to automatically load macros for all files?

(I asked this on SO a while back and got no answers. I hope in this new home I'll get a response).

I am not sure if you mean LyX macros or not. But if they are standard LaTeX macros, you can make your own style file, say "rachum.sty". Put all of your macros in there, and then have it included in the preamble by default.

This is useful for (La)TeX users in general. I have a lot of common things in my own file, such as \newcommand{\Integers}{\mathbb{Z}} and such.

LyX uses LaTeX as the backend, so in principle you can use any LaTeX macro in LyX.

For your case, you can go to Document --> Settings --> LaTeX preamble, and add your \newcommand there. To use it in a document just type \from, but note that this only works in math mode.

LyX won't necessarily show it formatted as you're typing but it will come up in a PDF export.

Make a sauravmacros.sty file with this content and place your macros and other definitions there.

With more and more macros etc. you will change this only and provide options, perhaps.

Place it in the local directory or in your local texmf path, which depends on the OS. See the environment variable $TEXINPUTS on Linux for example.

As for the cloud - storage: That's a personal opinion and matter of taste, I consider to do this so in future too, but not in a public repository.

The common macro file of labs etc. should not be treated differently. If all is on a server accessible for all users the common lab macro file is basically treated the same as a local personal file -- the question is rather who has the administrative rights to change this. I really suggest to use a versioning system then!
