MATLAB: ‘str2double’ is preferred over ‘str2num

'str2num' vs. 'str2double'

Many times while writting matlab code, matlab forces to use 'str2double' function instead of 'str2num'.

I searched a lot, but could not get a convincing answer. Anyobody here has any idea?

MATLAB does not force one to use str2double(), but mlint may recommend it.

>> str2num('sqrt(pi)')
ans =
          1.77245385090552

Did you really want people to be able to enter arbitrary text and have it executed by MATLAB ?

Floating point variables do not have leading 0's physically stored in memory (not counting the denormalized numbers of course). So 0001 and 1 are stored exactly the same in memory. If you want to display the leading 0's then you need to use a format that specifies that on print out. E.g.,

>> day = '0001'
day =
0001
>> d = str2double(day)
d =
     1
>> fprintf('%04d\n',d)
0001

MATLAB: Is there a function like string2double that can handle a numerical input

First test if the input isnumeric. If it's not, try converting it from text data to a number.
