i m working on skin color segmentation, i want extract the luminance & chroma componets, plz tell me the formula & standards.

 i m doing face detection project in C#.net language.

The gamut of skin is a boomerang or banana-shaped cluster. It can't be extracted with normal sectioning by planes in any usual color space. You can go here for further research: Vision Bibliography, particularly Section "21.2.10.1 Skin Color Models"

I have all kinds of color segmentation routines in my file Exchange http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/?term=authorid%3A31862 Just detect white and yellow and AND them together. Or do it in one shot:

% Extract the individual red, green, and blue color channels.
redChannel = rgbImage(:, :, 1);
greenChannel = rgbImage(:, :, 2);
blueChannel = rgbImage(:, :, 3);
% Threshold each channel with the right thresholds
whiteAndYellow = redChannel > redThreshold & ...
    greenChannel > greenThreshold & ...
    (blueChannel > blueThreshold1 | blueChannel < blueThreshold2);

Play around with the threshold values until you find some that work.

YCBCR = rgb2ycbcr(RGB) converts the truecolor image RGB to the equivalent image in the YCbCr color space. RGB must be a M-by-N-by-3 array.
If the input is uint8, YCBCR is uint8, where Y is in the range [16 235], and Cb and Cr are in the range [16 240]. If the input is a double, Y is in the range [16/255 235/255] and Cb and Cr are in the range [16/255 240/255]. If the input is uint16, Y is in the range [4112 60395] and Cb and Cr are in the range [4112 61680].
