In order to properly view a MATLAB license file you will want to open the file using a plain text editor. There are many different types of these applications available. 
OS X and Linux are UNIX-based operating systems and thus any text editor on these operating systems can handle MATLAB license files without issue.
Windows has two text editor applications included with the operating system, when handling MATLAB license files you will want to utilize WordPad. WordPad will properly view the license file as well as retain the correct format when saved. NotePad can also be used but sometimes improperly displays the file.
