MATLAB: Use of if-else inside timer

Hi all,

Does anyone know if an if-else can be used inside a timer? Like, I'm running a timer. I want that after 3 seconds, it checks to see if a condition is true and then executes the code block if it is so. Else, it should do something else. Is this possible?

I had this in mind: t = timer('TimerFcn', 'if n == 23 {do something} else {do something else} end', 'StartDelay', 3); start(t)

I would be thankful for any help.

Sure. But I don't know if the absolute elapsed time is available in the timer callback function (I doubt it), so you might have to use persistent variables (look it up) to keep track of that.

I don't know of this being possible, but it is certainly a good idea for an enhancement request.

Here is how I would tackle this:

Have the timer only execute once, i.e. 'TasksToExecute' = 1.
In the 'TimerFcn' have it start a new timer with a StartDelay equivalent to your new period.
Finally at the end of the 'TimerFcn', have it delete the timer calling it so you don't end up with hundreds of timers

a = timer('ExecutionMode','fixedRate','Period',1,'TimerFcn',@myfun);
start(a);
end
function myfun(obj,evt)
for i=1:3
    disp(datestr(now));
end
disp('===============');
end

and call it with

my_timer = test();

When you like to stop the timer call

stop(my_timer)

Or in the case you want to wait until the timer is done and you know how often the for loop should be triggered do this:

function a = test
a = timer('ExecutionMode','fixedRate','Period',1,'TimerFcn',@myfun,'TasksToExecute',10);
start(a);
wait(a);
disp('timer done')
end
function myfun(obj,evt)
for i=1:3
    disp(datestr(now));
end
disp('===============');
end

Make sure the tme myfun needs to run is lower than 1 second.
