i have created a mat file(v7.3) 'thesis.mat' with several large variables. The mat file even appears in my directory and has the saved variables with the required values. However,

m=matfile('thesis.mat');

gives the error,

Undefined function or method 'matfile' for input arguments of type 'char'.

what am i doing wrong??? im using R2009a

As indicated on the documentation page online (which is for the most recent release) the matfile function was introduced in release R2011b. Your release is older than this so it does not have this function.

save('test','test','-v7.3');
T=rand(1e6,1);
save('test.mat','T','-append','-nocompression')

-nocompression is only supported for MAT-files created in v7.3

This is due to the way logged data is saved in MAT files in MATLAB 7.9 (R2009b).
