It depends on the license type you school purchased and whether they have a software maintenance contract or not. The administrator of your MATLAB license should know.
If you run the command "license" and reveice a number, then it is a professional license you may or may not have maintenance. If it returns "EDU", you have a student version you cannot upgrade.
