To the best of my knowledge it is not possible to remove the Details view from the current folder pannel, but you can minimize/hide it by clicking the highlighted part.
By selecting you mean while loading? If it is while loading then you can use matfile which access and change variables in MAT-file without loading file into memory. If you just select the mat file. It generally doesnot make the MATLAB busy.
