MATLAB: The FileName property of a figure is not empty

I am not working with GUIDE yet find the full path of the file as the FileName property

instead of an empty string as documented in the "Figure Properties" (MATLAB R2015b):

"If you are not working in GUIDE, then the FileName property is empty."

Why this is happening?

This is a documentation bug.

There are no workarounds.

When using "uigetfile", it returns multiple values. The first one is the filename, and the second value is the path to the file.

You can return the path from that function and use "fullfile" to construct an absolute path to the file. This will be able to load the file correctly.

Solution:

[filename, pth] = uigetfile('*.txt', 'Please select the data file.');
mylist = readcell(fullfile(pth, filename), 'Delimiter', '');
