Is there any (fairly simple) way to make a gradient background in a gui, just to make it look better? Something like is done in Shape Fill in Microsoft Word.

We then create a pushbutton in the lower left corner with a callback function that will delete the existing image (graphics object), read the new one, and then display it in the current axes.
Try the above and see what happens!
Why not just reduce the height of your first axes a little? See the comments below (I also made some additional improvements).
