MATLAB: Running R within matlab

I was wondering if it is possible to work between matlab and R to plot some data. I have a script in matlab which generates a text file. From this I was wondering if it was possible to open R from within matlab and plot the data from this text file and then return to matlab.

For example, if I save a text file called test.txt, in the path 'E:\', and then define the path of R which in my case will be:

pathR = 'C:\Program Files\R\R-2.14.1\bin\R';

Is it possible to run a script already written in R saved under test1.R (saved in the same directory as test.txt) in R from matlab?

There is a Rscript command, so you can run it in this way:

!Rscript your_script.r

Rscript is a noninteractive variant of the standard R command, designed for just this use.

I've used Rscript with the --vanilla flag successfully from the OS X command line in the past. To use in MATLAB, this is what I'd consider doing.

1. Prepend the following to the top of myscript.R, the program you want to run:

   #! /usr/bin/Rscript

2. From the OS X shell, set the executable bit on your program if it hasn't been done:

   $ chmod u+x myscript.R

3. Now, you're set up to use the system function in MATLAB:

   >> system('~/path_to/myscript.R')

The usual caveats about paths apply.

Hi,

I tried your code with a simulated NI USB-6259 and it is working fine for me in 12a. Could it be that you are using the 12a prerelease? I have seen that kind of error there but not in the actual release version.

The release version has as version number:

>> version
ans =
7.14.0.739 (R2012a)
