MATLAB: Renaming a file the same as a variable

functionsystemtext;

I am trying to rename a file the same as a variable. The variable obviously will be string, its just so I can make my program even more automated. For example :

x = 'RenameTest'
movefile('Original.txt', '%s.txt', x)

That code doesn't work but is this possible to do?

As written, just

 movefile('Original.txt', [x '.txt'])

More general and where you were probably trying to head would be something like

outfile=sprintf('%s.txt',newfilebase);
movefile(oldfile,outfile)

where oldfile is a string variable containing the original name.

Well, once you've got the right content in memory, then just rewrite the file. But, specifically on that has some bearing on the content for easy ways.

But, if that is the only thing you care to do, then the simplest irrespective of what the file content is, is probably

jpg images are binary images, but textread() is for reading text files.

Does the .dat file perhaps contain the names of the images rather than the images themselves?

There is no standard format for .dat files: it is a suffix used by any program to hold any data. You need to know the internal structure of that particular .dat file in order to work with it. It might be pure text (most .dat files are not).
