MATLAB: Remove path from file name

Hello!

There's probably a simple tool for this, but I can't find it:

Have a string for a file name that includes the full path, like:

C:\Users\DougAnderson\Documents\MATLAB\SHtest\sig hole 1.xlsx

where the last part (the actual file name) may contain spaces. I would like to change this to, for example

sig hole 1

You can use fileparts. I had to switch the direction of the slashes because I'm using a mac, but it should work on your machine keeping the slashes the way you wrote them:

[~,name,~] = fileparts('C:/Users/DougAnderson/Documents/MATLAB/SHtest/sig hole 1.xlsx')
name =
sig hole 1

You just need to break down the mydir.folder into its different folders and use the one before last to rename your file.:

dir_path = fullfile('C:\Users\johan\Skrivbord\test'); 
mydir = dir(fullfile(dir_path, '**/*middle.log')); 
for i = 1:numel(mydir);
   folders = strsplit(mydir(i).folder, filesep);  %split path into individual folders
   newname = [folders{end-1}, '.log'];
   movefile(fullfile(mydir(i).folder, mydir(i).name), newname)); %rename file
end

MATLAB: Error using copyfile No matching files were found.

I'd replace

    idx = strfind(myfile(i).name,'_thumb'); 
    if ~isempty(idx)
        %do nothing
    else

by the simpler

if ~contains(myfile(i).name, '_thumb')

which does the required work inside the if.

The problem is that you only pass the filename of the source to copyfile so it looks for it in the current directory, not in path1. The fix is simple:

if ~contains(myfile(i).name, '_thumb')
    copyfile(fullfile(path1, myfile(i).name), dest);
end
