MATLAB: Reading text data consisting of a specific format

I have a text file containing data of the form:

201901010000
201901010100
201901010200
201901010300
201901010400
201901010500
201901010600
201901010700
201901010800
201901010900
201901011000

…

The data reflect date and time information. I'm trying to figure out a way to read these data in and then parse to a matrix that reflects year, month, day, hour etc. The latter is simple, I'm just stuck on how to read the data in. I have explored both textscan and fscanf but nothing obvious springs to mind. For example, read first 4 numbers = year, 5-6=month etc. Thank you

dateMat = datevec(datastr,'yyyymmddHH');

Check that the input format in datevec() describes your datetime format.

%{....}D is a date specification. %{MM-dd-yyyy HH:mm:ss}D is equivalent to asking to

datetime(TheInputString, 'Format', 'MM-dd-yyyy HH:mm:ss')

which is numeric month, numeric day of month, four digit year, 24-hour type hour, two digit minute, two digits seconds.

and %{MM-dd-yyyy HH:mm:ss.SSSSSS}D is equivalent to asking to

datetime(TheInputString, 'Format', 'MM-dd-yyyy HH:mm:ss.SSSSSS')

which is numeric month, numeric day of month, four digit year, 24-hour type hour, two digit minute, two digits seconds, 6 digit fractions of a second.

Note: if you are using textscan then the %{}D formats given that way can have difficulty if the Whitespace parameter includes space: MATLAB would generally see the space as indicating the end of the field before trying to parse it as a date. readtable() is better at handling that.

MATLAB: How to make this into a function

Doesn't look like it needs any inputs.

If you want outputs returned of the data structure, say, instead of just having everything in the workspace then convert it to a function by simply adding the function statement at the beginning.

function data = your_new_funct_name

Remember the naming/calling in Matlab to name the function m-file the same as the function name.
