MATLAB: Plotting data throughout a 24 hour period

Hello,

I have data for a single 24 hour period. The data consists of time stamped sensor readings throughout the day.

The original data was time stamped using the 'DateNumber' format. I have converted the time into the 'datevec' format. The time is now in a 6 column matrix where columns 4:6 represent the hour, minute and seconds respectively.

I have plotted the data using a scatter plot where the sensor readings have been plotted against the fourth column only i.e. only for the hour and disregarding the minutes & seconds.

Could somebody explain how to include the minutes as well as the hour within the plot?

I would suggest the following:

hour = datevec(:,4);
minute = datevec(:,5);
hour_decimal = hour+minute/60;
plot(hour_decimal,data)

The easiest is to use the days function with a duration object:

>> days(duration(5,3,10))  %fraction of a day for 5 hours, 3 minutes, 10 seconds
ans =
         0.210532407407407
>> days(duration(47,59,59)) %fraction of days for 47 hours, 59 minutes, 59 seconds
ans =
          1.99998842592593

Note that the format of the datetime array is irrelevant. It is only used for display. You could of course change the Format so that it only shows hours and minutes but calculations would still involve the date as well.

You use the hour and minute functions to extract the hours and minutes from a datetime array. Alternatively, you use the Hour and Minute properties of the datetime object.

d = datetime + hours(1:10)' + minutes(1:10)';  %create demo datetime a array
hour(d)   %get the hour
d.Hour    %another way

minute(d) %get the minute
d.Minute  %another way

As for the plot, I'm unclear what you want to do. If two values have the same hours and minutes but different day, do you want to plot them at the same abscissa, like a scatter plot?
